Foodie Christmas gifts from Haringey's small local businesses

Organic veg box gift subscription

This Christmas, why not keep it local and treat the foodies in your life to some locally sourced food and drink gifts from small businesses in Haringey? Apart from avoiding supply chain issues, it's a great way to support your local community while reducing Christmas gifting related waste.

Much has been said already about the impact of Christmas gift giving on the environment. The traditional emphasis on tangible goods that are often mass produced, imported and bought from big brands and large international corporations creates huge amounts of waste and does nothing to support your local community. Experiences, consumables, subscriptions and acts of service are increasingly becoming more popular as alternative gift ideas and we're all for it!

This year is the perfect opportunity to think locally. When you buy a gift from a small, local business, you’re giving your money to an entity based here and not in a tax haven, owned by normal people (not billionaires!) who are more likely to put the money back into the local community. Conscious gifting ensures your money goes to benefit not just your loved one, but also the environment, your neighbourhood and your neighbours.

Haringey has been blessed with a variety of local food-related businesses offering many unique, meaningful gift options at a range of prices. See below for our favourite options. And if you’re reading this post a tad too close to Christmas for comfort, remember: everything here makes the perfect last minute gift, too!

Organic veg gift subscription from Crop Drop

Yes, we do offer gift subscriptions! We might be biased, but we think getting a regular bag of delicious organic veg can be a life-changing experience.

If you have someone in your life who’s looking to get into healthy cooking and eating, is thinking of going vegetarian or vegan (after all, Veganuary is just around the corner) or just wants to cook with the best available fresh ingredients, why not treat them with a weekly (or fortnightly) bag of locally sourced organic veg? Choose from any of our veg bags and any subscription length starting at one month. You can also add the optional fruit supplement if you’re feeling extra generous! Prices start at £8.40 a week for our small veg bag.

To purchase a gift subscription, sign up with your details and email veg@cropdrop.co.uk letting us know that this is the gift subscription. Include the recipient’s name and email address (so we can send them our weekly newsletter), and how long you would like the subscription to be. We can provide a printable gift card with the details of the subscription that you can include in a Christmas card for your loved one.

Once the gift subscription period ends, we’ll contact the recipient to ask if they’d like to continue with the subscription.

Note: here at Crop Drop we serve only the Haringey borough of London. If you’d like to give a gift veg box subscription to someone outside of Haringey, you can look for similar veg box schemes here.

Cooking workshops with Chef Alan Rosenthal

Chef Alan Rosenthal has contributed many inspiring recipes to our growing recipe collection. He’s now teaching vegetarian one-pot cooking online and in person – a wonderful gift for anyone wanting to learn some useful new kitchen skills. Here’s what he has to say about his classes:

“After running my one pot classes at Leith’s School of Food and Wine for 10 years, I’ve now taken them online during the pandemic and in person with covid safety precautions. One-pot cooking cuts down on washing up, is great for freezer filling and entertaining, delivers some fantastic flavours and is usually stress free to boot! I will guide you through 3 recipes during the class with up to 4 other participants and you’ll be left with a fridge full of meals for the following few days.

In addition to my one pot class, I’m also running tailor made classes for anyone wanting to upskill in the kitchen during the pandemic. Whatever it is that you’d like to do better, I’d be happy to discuss a bespoke class to help you on your way!

Please contact me at alan@alanrosenthal.co.uk for further information.”

Alan’s workshops cost £65 for an online workshop and £85 in person. His cookbook can also be bought from the site at £12.99.
